About District

The district  Purba Bardhaman, one of the important districts of the Burdwan Division, is situated between 23o53′ N to 22o56′ N Latitude and 88o25′ E to 87o56′ E Longitude. It contains an area of 5432.69 Sq.K.M. as ascertained by the latest survey, and a population according to the Census of 2011 is 4835532 persons. Burdwan the Principal town and administrative headquarters is situated on the north bank of Damodar river, in 23o14′ N Latitude and 87o51′ E Longitude. The name Bardhamana in the vernacular is a corruption of the Sanskrit Vardhamana (the present participle passive of the verb Vardh) and implies “The increasing or prosperous”.

As per the 2011 Census of India data, recast after bifurcation of Bardhaman district in 2017, Purba Bardhaman district had a total population of 4,835,532. There were 2,469,310 (51%) males and 2,366,222 (49%) females. 726,345 (15.02%) live in urban areas. Bardhaman region is also known as the rice bowl of Bengal.
